Generative AI, AI agent, copilot: what are the differences?
We talk about generative AI, copilot, assistant, agent. These words refer to very different tools. By the end of this article, you will know how to distinguish them and choose the one that suits each situation.
- Generative AI produces content on demand, without autonomy
- The copilot assists you directly in software, but does not work alone
- The AI agent executes a recurring task autonomously, according to your rules
For two years, the words have been multiplying: generative AI, AI assistant, copilot, AI agent, chatbot. Press articles sometimes use them as synonyms. Yet they refer to tools that do not work the same way and do not serve the same needs. A tradesperson who wants to automate invoice reminders and an accountant looking to rephrase an email do not need the same tool.
IWhat is generative AI?
A system capable of creating new content based on a request in natural language.
Generative AI produces text, images, code or sound in response to what you ask it to do. It does nothing on its own: it waits for an instruction, processes it, and returns a result. ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney or Le Chat are examples of generative AI.
When you open ChatGPT and type 'write me a thank you email for a client', you're using generative AI. The system produces text, you read it, you copy it, you send it yourself. If you want another email tomorrow, you'll have to come back, type a new request, and start over. Generative AI is an on-demand production tool: it does what you tell it, when you tell it, and nothing more.
IIWhat is a copilot or AI assistant?
A generative AI integrated into software to help you while you work.
The copilot is a layer of AI added to an existing tool: Word, Gmail, Excel, a browser. It suggests, corrects, completes, but always in response to what you do. You remain in control, it assists you in real time. Microsoft Copilot in Office or Gmail suggestions are examples.
The copilot does not work alone. It watches you write an email and suggests how to finish the sentence. It sees your Excel spreadsheet and suggests a formula. It summarizes a document you have opened. As soon as you close the software, it stops. As soon as you come back, it resumes, but without memory of what it did the day before. The copilot is a session assistant: it improves what you are currently doing, but it does nothing on your behalf when you are not there.
IIIWhat is an AI agent?
An autonomous system that executes a specific task on a recurring basis, without human intervention each time.
The AI agent receives a mission, documents, rules. It then works according to a defined rhythm: once a week, every day, every hour. It reads, decides, acts, reports. You can pause it, correct it, ask it to validate before sending. But between two interventions, it moves forward on its own.
The AI agent doesn't wait for you. You explained to it that every Monday, it must check unpaid invoices and send a polite follow-up email. It does so, whether you're at the office, on vacation, or asleep. It applies your rules, uses your documents, respects the tone you chose. If someone replies, it alerts you. The agent is a permanent delegate : it takes over a repetitive task so you no longer have to think about it.
IVComparison: generative AI, copilot, AI agent
VHow to choose between these three tools?
- 1Does the task come up often?
If you do the same thing every week or every day, an AI agent can take it over. If it's one-off, generative AI is enough.
- 2Do you need direct assistance?
If you want the copilot to suggest a phrasing while you write, that's what it's designed for. It assists you, it doesn't replace you.
- 3Do you really want to delegate?
If you want the task to be done without thinking about it, the AI agent is the only one that can work in your absence, according to your rules.
An architecture firm can use all three. Generative AI to write a complex technical note. The copilot to correct and improve an email being drafted. An AI agent to automatically follow up with clients who haven't paid their deposit. Each tool has its place, none replaces the other two.
VIWhy the AI agent is suitable for repetitive tasks
Repetitive tasks have two characteristics: they come up often, and they follow clear rules. Following up on an unpaid invoice, sending an appointment reminder, verifying that a document is complete, suggesting a weekly menu based on available ingredients. These tasks don't require new creativity each time. They require regularity and rigor.
Generative AI excels at one-off creation. The copilot excels at real-time assistance. The AI agent excels at autonomous and recurring execution. If you spend an hour a week doing the same thing, and that thing can be described in a few sentences, an agent can probably do it for you.
VIIWhere to start concretely
If you've never used AI before, start with generative AI. Open ChatGPT or Claude, ask a question, request some text. You'll quickly understand what these tools can do. Next, if you already use Word or Gmail, activate the integrated copilot and observe its suggestions. Finally, identify a repetitive task you would like to stop doing yourself. That's where an AI agent makes full sense.

?Questions we're asked
Is ChatGPT an AI agent?
No. ChatGPT is a generative AI. It produces content when you ask it to, but it does not work on its own between two conversations. It has no permanent mission or work rhythm.
Can a copilot send emails on my behalf?
The copilot helps you draft, but you're the one who clicks Send. It doesn't take initiative. An AI agent, on the other hand, can send an email according to the rules you've defined, after validation or automatically.
Can you use all three tools at the same time?
Yes, and it's often the best approach. Generative AI for one-off creations, the copilot for direct assistance, the AI agent for recurring tasks. Each has its role.
Does an AI agent cost more than a copilot?
Copilots are often included in existing software subscriptions. An AI agent is a separate service, with its own pricing. At ABYS, plans start at 19 euros excl. VAT per month.
How do I know if my task is suitable for an AI agent?
If you can explain the task in a few sentences, if it comes up regularly, and if it follows clear rules, it probably fits. Start with a simple task to test.
