My AI agent keeps making the same mistake: how do I teach it?
An agent that misclassifies invoices or forgets customer discounts is frustrating. But repeated errors always have an identifiable cause. This article shows you how to find it and fix it, using four simple levers.
- A recurring error always comes from a vague mission, missing documents, or validations without explanation
- Write out your corrections: a simple rejection teaches the agent nothing
- In case of accumulated confusion, recreating the agent with a clear mission is sometimes the fastest solution
You've created an AI agent, it works, but it keeps making the same error over and over. A restaurant owner recently described to me his invoice categorization agent: every week, beverage invoices ended up in the "supplies" category. He would correct it, and the agent would do it again. This situation is more common than you might think, and it always has an explanation.
IWhy does an AI agent repeat the same error?
An AI agent does not "understand" like a human. It follows a written mission, relies on the documents you provided it, and takes into account the corrections you signal to it. If it repeats an error, it is because one of these three elements is giving it the wrong direction. Or because it never received the signal that it was wrong.
Let's take the example of customer discounts. An accounting firm had created an agent to send payment reminders. The agent was systematically ignoring the 10% discount granted to loyal customers. The problem: the task said "send a reminder with the amount due", without mentioning the existence of discounts. The agent was doing exactly what it was asked to do.
The ability of an agent to adjust its behavior based on the feedback it receives.
An AI agent does not learn on its own like a child. It improves when you modify its task, enrich its reference documents, or explicitly signal to it that an action was incorrect. Without this feedback, it reproduces the same behavior indefinitely.
IIThe four levers to correct a recurring error
- 1Review the mission
Is your task precise enough? If you write "classify invoices", the agent cannot distinguish between beverages and supplies. Add the exact categories, sorting criteria, exceptions. A vague task produces random results.
- 2Check the documents provided
The agent relies on what you gave it. If it does not have your customer discount grid or your chart of accounts, it improvises. Add the missing document, even a simple two-column table often suffices.
- 3Signal the error explicitly
Did you tell the agent it was wrong? Refusing validation without explanation teaches it nothing. Write why: "This invoice is a beverage, not a supply, because the supplier is a wine wholesaler."
- 4Restart from scratch if necessary
Sometimes, successive corrections have created contradictions. An agent that has received opposite instructions can get stuck on incorrect behavior. Recreating the agent with a clean mission and up-to-date documents solves the problem.
IIILever 1: a mission that is too vague, the most frequent cause
The vague agent mission is responsible for the majority of repeated errors. When you write "respond to customer requests," the agent does not know what tone to adopt, what information to provide, what questions to ask. It makes choices, and these choices do not always match your expectations.
To check if your mission is precise enough, ask yourself this question: if you gave it to an intern who knows nothing about your business, would they know exactly what to do? If the answer is no, the agent will not either.
IVLever 2: missing or incomplete documents
The agent documents are the memory of your agent. Without them, it works blind. An agent for following up on unpaid invoices that does not have access to the list of customers with discounts cannot apply these discounts. A classification agent that does not have your category plan invents its own.
What documents should you provide? Everything that contains a rule the agent must follow: pricing grid, discount conditions, classification plan, response templates, list of categories. A simple Excel file will do. The agent reads PDFs, spreadsheets, images of documents.
VLever 3: validation that teaches nothing
When you refuse an agent action, do you tell it why? Many people click "refuse" without explanation. The agent knows something was wrong, but not what. It cannot correct what it does not understand.
The correction of recurring error goes through this explicit feedback. After three successful validations, you can switch the agent to automatic validation. But if you validated errors by oversight, the agent considers them correct. It will reproduce them.
VILever 4: when you need to start over
Sometimes, successive corrections have confused the agent. You modified the mission several times, added contradictory documents, gave opposite feedback. The agent no longer knows which rule to follow. In this case, the simplest thing is to create a new agent with a clean mission.
This is not a failure. It's like rewriting a document rather than accumulating corrections in red pen. You keep your documents, you rewrite a clear task, and you start fresh on a solid foundation. TheAI agent learning works better when the foundations are solid.
VIIComplete example: the agent that was misclassifying invoices
Let us go back to the restaurant owner from the beginning. His agent was classifying beverage invoices as "supplies." Here is how he solved the problem by applying the four levers.
Check what applies to you: the list remembers your answers on this device.
The problem came from levers 1 and 2: imprecise task and missing documents. He did not need to recreate the agent. Two adjustments were enough.
VIIIHow to avoid recurring errors from the start
The best correction is the one you don't have to make. When you create an agent, take the time to write a detailed task. List special cases. Provide all reference documents, even those that seem obvious to you. What is obvious to you is not obvious to the agent.
The dry run exists for that. Before the agent actually works, it shows you what it would do. If you see an error at this stage, correct the mission or the documents before launching the real work.
?Questions we're asked
My agent makes a different error each time, is it the same problem?
No, varied errors often indicate a mission that is too vague. The agent improvises due to lack of precise instructions. Rewrite the mission by detailing each scenario. If errors are random, it is because the agent lacks clear rules to follow.
How many corrections does it take before the agent improves?
There is no magic number. An agent can improve from the first correction if it is clear and the documents are complete. If you correct the same error three times without improvement, the problem likely comes from the mission or the documents, not from the validation.
Can I modify an agent's mission while it is in progress?
Yes, you can modify the mission at any time. The agent will take the new version into account starting with its next work cycle. However, avoid successive contradictory modifications that can create confusion.
Should I recreate the agent if I have made many corrections?
Not necessarily. If the corrections were going in the same direction and the agent is performing better, keep it. Recreate it only if you have given contradictory instructions or if the original mission was fundamentally unsuitable.
Does the agent keep all my corrections in memory?
The agent takes into account the feedback you gave it during validations. But its "main memory" remains the mission and the documents. If you want a rule to always be applied, add it to the mission rather than repeating it in a correction.
