AI tokens: what an agent consumes and how to predict it
Tokens are the unit of work for AI: everything an agent reads and everything it writes is counted in tokens. After this course, you will know how to estimate what a task consumes, choose the right plan, and configure your agents so you don't run out of tokens before the end of the month.
- A token is a piece of a word; a French word often counts as more than one.
- Everything the agent reads consumes tokens, not just what it writes.
- An agent's consumption depends mainly on what it rereads with each pass.
- Frequency multiplies spending: a daily pass costs much more than a weekly pass.
- The account displays consumption: observe the first week before choosing a token pool.
AI plans are not counted in hours or number of emails, but in tokens. The word may seem abstract. Yet it describes a simple reality, and understanding it avoids two costly mistakes: paying for a token pool that is too large out of caution, or running out of a token pool that is too small by the second week. This course explains what a token is, what consumes them, and how to forecast.
IWhat exactly is a token?
The small piece of text that the AI reads or writes at once.
An AI model does not read entire words: it cuts the text into fragments. A short and common word often forms a single token, a long or rare word is cut into several. Punctuation marks also count.
Take the word "facturation". The AI does not see it as a whole: it breaks it into two or three pieces, depending on the model. Models have been trained mostly on English, so a French text is often broken into more tokens than it has words. Remember a prudent rule: count a little more than one token per French word, sometimes much more with proper nouns, product references or numbers.
IIReading also consumes tokens
This is the point that almost everyone forgets. When an agent reads your pricing grid, each piece of that grid is counted. When they read a received email, too. When they write their response, too. Reading consumes tokens, not just writing. Some models "think" additionally before answering, and this internal reflection also counts.
Direct consequence: an agent who writes three lines can consume a lot if they had to read fifty pages to write them. The length of the response tells you almost nothing about the cost. What matters is everything the agent has in front of them when working.
IIIOrders of magnitude: an email, a page, a long PDF
The exact figures vary depending on the model and language. Here are cautious orders of magnitude, for reasoning and not for billing.
These values add up with each passage: the mission, the useful documents, the day's items (received emails, overdue invoices), then what the agent writes. If you want just one idea to remember: it is the large documents reread with each passage that make the bill, much more than the emails sent.
IVThe four token pools of ABYS
On ABYS, each plan gives a token tank for the month. This tank is shared by all agents on the account: from 19 euros, you can have multiple agents working, and it is the amount of tokens that limits the work, not the number of agents. The account displays consumption throughout the month. A yearly payment option exists, with a discount.

The tank is shared by all agents on the account.
Scale adapted so the four rhythms remain readable. A received email adds one passage.
VHow frequency changes consumption
The calculation fits in one line: monthly consumption = cost of one passage × number of passages. The cost of a passage depends on what the agent reads and writes. The number of passages depends on your plan's rhythm. An agent that runs every day makes about thirty passages per month; an agent that runs once a week makes four or five. An email received by the agent adds a passage.
- 1Measure a pass
The trial run is free: it therefore tells you nothing about consumption. Let the first real passages go through, then note how much the consumption displayed in your account has increased. That is your best measure.
- 2Count the passages
Multiply by the number of passages in the month according to your plan's rhythm: four or five per week, about thirty per day, about one hundred eighty every four hours, about seven hundred twenty every hour.
- 3Add the other agents
Do the same calculation for each agent on the account, since they all draw from the same monthly reservoir.
- 4Keep a margin
Plan for busy weeks: more emails received, more invoices, so more reading at each pass.
- 5Check after one week
Compare your estimate to the actual consumption displayed, then lighten the documents or pause an unhelpful agent before changing plans.
VIConsume less without working less well
Before taking a larger reservoir, check if the agent is not reading too much. The levers are simple and do not degrade the work.
Check what applies to you: the list remembers your answers on this device.
If, after these adjustments, the reservoir is still too tight, switch to the next plan. I advise you to decide based on one or two weeks of actual consumption, not an estimate made on the first day.
A craftsman keeps all his invoices from the past three years in the same spreadsheet, and his follow-up agent reviews it at each pass. What does the lesson advise?
?Questions we're asked
What are AI tokens?
A token is a fragment of text: a short word, a piece of a long word, a punctuation mark. AI models read and write token by token, and this unit is used to measure their work. In French, a word often counts for more than one token.
How many tokens for an email?
A short email of a few lines represents on the order of a few hundred tokens. But to write it, the agent also reads his mission, your documents and the message received. The actual cost of an email therefore depends mainly on what the agent had to read before, not on the length of the email itself.
What happens when the token reservoir is empty?
At ABYS, an email notifies you when your agents have consumed four fifths of the month's tokens. If the tank empties, the agents stop and tell you; they resume the following month, or right away if you switch to a higher plan. To avoid this, pause your least urgent agents or lighten their documents.
Does an AI agent consume tokens when it has nothing to do?
Yes, generally a little: even to note that no invoice is overdue, the agent must read their mission and the day's items. This cost is low if their documents are light. This is another reason to choose a plan whose rhythm matches your tasks, rather than the fastest one out of reflex.
Compare the four monthly tanks and choose the one that matches the rhythm of your agents.
